Environmental factors are a critical decision criterion for entrepreneurs planning real estate, energy or technology-oriented investments in Kosovo and for foreign employees (expats) considering settling in this country. Air quality, pollution and environmental issues determine not only public health but also the growth potential of the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), insulation and renewable energy sectors. Household surveys on environmental issues conducted by the Kosovo Statistical Agency (ASK) reveal consumer perception and market opportunities in this area.
Environmental complaints due to pollution (smoke, dust, bad smells or dirty water) in Kosovo have decreased significantly over the years. According to ASK data, while 12.9% of households across Kosovo experienced pollution problems in their environment in 2018, this rate decreased to 6.4% in 2019 and 5.5% in 2020. These data show that infrastructure improvements and the transition from solid fuel to cleaner energy sources have found a positive response from the public.
Location-based distribution of environmental problems is important for investment strategies. While 20.2% of households living in urban (city) areas complained about pollution in 2018, this rate decreased to 5.6% in 2020, indicating a serious transformation in the quality of urbanization. Complaint rates in rural areas were measured at 5.4% in 2020, equaling those in cities. However, periodic air quality declines experienced during the winter months, especially in regions with intense urbanization such as the capital Pristina, continue to create specific market needs.
Although the environmental improvement trend continues, the perception of remaining pollution and the European Union's "Green Deal" targets present great opportunities for the following sectors in Kosovo:
5.5% of the population directly feels pollution, dust and smoke as a problem. Developing consumer purchasing power (as evident from meat consumption and holiday data) increases investments in health. An educated and health-conscious customer base is forming in Kosovo for companies selling/importing home air cleaners (products with HEPA filters), smart air conditioning and ventilation systems.
The biggest cause of environmental pollution (especially smoke) is old-style heating methods. When this table is combined with the data that 21.6% of households cannot adequately heat their homes; Investments in heat pumps, solar panels and exterior insulation can be marketed with the vision of not only "warming" but also "keeping the environment clean". Renewable energy projects see both consumer demand and are open to potential state and EU support.
