This article examines Kosovo's lignite (coal) production and its dominant role in the country's energy supply. Coal accounts for approximately 55.9% of Kosovo's total primary energy supply at 1509.80 ktoe in 2024. Kosovo possesses some of Europe's largest lignite reserves, which serve as the foundation of its baseload electricity generation. While this domestic resource provides energy security, the global energy transition creates opportunities in modernization, efficiency improvements and clean energy alternatives.
The main findings obtained from the uploaded Kosovo Statistical Agency (ASK) primary source, coal production and final consumption files are as follows: Lignite Dominance in Primary Supply: Energy__The quantity of coal as the primary source available _ktoe__ According to 2012 - 2024.csv data, the total coal supply available as a primary source in Kosovo was 1528.10 ktoe in 2012, while it was 1528.10 ktoe in 2024. It was realized at the level of 1509.80 ktoe. 1500 of this huge amount.
The Journey of Coal in Kosovo: Primary Supply vs. Final Direct Consumption (2024)
The graph above shows that almost all of the coal mined in Kosovo is allocated directly to electricity production. This high-carbon structure of the grid necessitates self-consumption solar energy (SPP) investments for exporting companies.

- ✦Why is this a great opportunity for solar energy (SPP) investments? Industrialists who do not want to lose export competition must urgently install Solar Energy Power Plants (SPPs) on their own roofs in order to reset their carbon footprint.
- ✦For EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Installation) companies in Kosovo, this creates a huge and profitable B2B market as factories are forced to switch to “green electricity”.
