This volume, which increases with the change in consumption habits and the shift of the population to cities, is rapidly filling the economic life of existing wild and semi-regular landfills. Regional Capacity Shifts: Podujevë, Pristina and Prizren Sites The most striking element in the data is the logistics operation shifts between storage sites. The Pristina field, which has suffered the largest garbage load in Kosovo for years (176 thousand tons in 2023), seems to have transferred most of its load to the Podujevë field (190,513 tons) in 2024. Other major centers such as Prizren and Mitrovicë continue to accept consistently tens of thousands of tons of waste each year. (Kosovo Investment Editorial Comment:) The mere "storage" of more than 500 thousand tons of waste per year in Kosovo offers two major investment visions for international companies. First; The aim is to establish "Biogas / Waste-to-Energy" power plants where electricity is produced by drawing methane gas (LFG - Landfill Gas) from these huge organic waste piles.
The second is; To enter into Public-Private Partnership (PPP) tenders with municipalities to transform existing landfills into integrated solid waste disposal and separation facilities at European Union standards. The licenses and purchase guarantees that the Kosovo government will issue in these areas in line with its ESG targets will create projects with strong feasibility. Data alone is not enough to make an investment decision; Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), waste concession agreements and local municipal licenses should also be legally examined.
