This 76% recycling/use rate is proof that the industry is turning waste into a resource rather than a cost. Direct Carbon (CO2) Footprint of the Construction Sector In terms of air emissions, the carbon footprint of construction activities resulting from direct energy (fuel) use is relatively low. ASK data shows that the NACE F sector produced only 1.07 Gg of CO2 emissions in 2020 and 2021. (Of course, emissions during the "production" phase of materials such as cement and iron belong to the manufacturing industry). (Kosovo Investment Editorial Comment:) The fact that construction waste can be largely reused is a great operational advantage that minimizes "waste disposal taxes" (disposal costs) for contractors developing public housing or commercial real estate projects in Kosovo.
It is extremely attractive for international investment funds (REITs) to develop Green Building (LEED/BREEAM) certified projects in the Kosovo market; because the local market already supports the "material circularity" scores of these certifications with high waste recovery rates. Environmentally friendly projects both create premium valuations at the sales/marketing stage and facilitate access to ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) credits. Data alone is not enough to make an investment decision; Excavation dump site permits, zoning plans and EIA exemption/approval processes also require legal review.
