This figure exceeded the 40 million cubic meters threshold in 2020, thanks to increasing living standards and expanding municipal infrastructure networks, and reached 44.43 million cubic meters by 2023. This 31% growth in household wastewater alone necessitates local governments to exceed their wastewater collection (sewage) capacity and focus on the "treatment" phase. Wastewater Production and Network Capacity Per Capita When looked at on an individual scale, the annual average wastewater discharge per capita in Kosovo is around 24.82 cubic meters (2022 data). Considering that more than 99% of the population is integrated with water and sewage services (fixed by previous ASK data), this huge collected wastewater needs to be treated and discharged into nature (rivers) without harming the environment. (Kosovo Investment Editorial Comment:) The annual wastewater volume exceeding 44 million cubic meters is a huge potential for multinational companies engaged in Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) construction and operation (EPC and O&M contracts) in the Kosovo market.
Total Wastewater Volume: While the amount of wastewater produced by households and discharged into the sewer network in Kosovo was 33.89 million cubic meters in 2013, it increased steadily to 43.66 million cubic meters in 2022, and reached a historical peak of 44.43 million cubic meters (44,431,380 m³) in 2023. 10-Year Growth Rate: With population growth and urban expansion, the volume of household wastewater released into the network has grown by approximately 31% in the last 10-year period (2013-2023). Wastewater Production per Person: According to the current per capita wastewater data for 2022, an individual connected to the network in Kosovo produces an average of 24.82 cubic meters of sewage/wastewater annually.
