e Saying? The waste management strategy in Kosovo is largely based on dumping waste into licensed landfills. According to official data for 2024, while 502,917 tons of waste were directly stored in the country, the amount of waste that went through the recycling process remained at only 22,014 tons. While the waste generation rate increases every year, the limited recycling capacity shows the urgent need for modern waste separation and integrated recycling facilities.
Among the recycled wastes, the largest share in terms of quantity is paper and cardboard. A total of 11,557 tons of paper and cardboard were recycled in 2024. However, since Kosovo does not have sufficient paper processing factories to convert these wastes into finished products, a significant part of the collected paper is exported. Current waste route data (2016) shows that more than half of processed paper waste (5,928 tonnes out of 8,828 tonnes output) is sent abroad.
